Strange gratitude

Today while Burke was playing outside on the swing set he fell from the 4 foot platform face first into the grass. (we've been waiting for this to happen...) I of course jumped up and grabbed him while he did that silent cry thing. Luckily he just had some scrapes on his face and nothing was broken. As soon as I knew he was okay, I was grateful that he could fall off the swing set. Ok, I know that sounds weird so let me tell you why I'm grateful for this.

For the last 1 1/2 years I have been following the blog of a very special little boy, Tripp. (Warning, the pictures of Tripp are very hard to see. He is covered in blisters because of his skin disease. The videos of him will warm your heart so even though its heart wrenching to see him, he will make you smile!) Tripp is a 2 year old with a very rare disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa or EB. Tripp has the most severe form of this disease. Tripp cannot talk or eat. He can't walk, crawl, ride little bikes, cuddle with his mom, swim, play on a swing set, climb or do anything that would cause friction to his skin. He will never experience things that little boys experience. He is amazing and courageous. His mom sets the example of enduring to the end. Please, check them out and add Tripp to your prayers. He needs all he can get!

Burke (Cayson and Carly too!) can do all these things that Tripp cannot do and for that I am grateful- even if it means falling from the swing set or tipping over in the pool. And even more than being grateful that he can do that, I am truly blessed that he has been okay after tipping in the pool and falling off the swing set. I have taken for granted the things my kids can do. Although I never want them to be hurt I am glad that they can ride a bike, swim, climb a ladder, run, scrape their knees and even fall off the swing set.

It is so easy to try and shelter our children from possible falls etc. But you are right, we should be grateful they experience it! I am very lucky to have two healthy children. It is something I think about often. :)
